It can be said that we get the Judges we deserve because we do not always know who we are voting for.  Indeed, many people might not be aware that Judges can be elected by the people.  How many times do we cast our votes for Judges, not understanding what kind of man or woman we bring to this important position?  Giving up our right to vote for Judges (as is done is some states) had also not been a good solution. The judicial candidate screening panels, sometimes operating in secrecy, have  not  prevented incompetent or  ignorant persons from being appointed Judges.

It is our burden to select  and vote for good and capable candidates to public office including the judicial system.  We as voters must accept our responsibility to learn about those we elect or appoint to positions of trust and responsibility.  Sometimes the best way to learn about a public official is by his official record, in black and white.  In the case of Judges they make an official record every day.  They sit on the bench and their action or lack of action is a public record available for examination by every citizen.

The United States of America has been blessed with some of the most courageous and capable Judges a nation could ever wish to have.  The Judiciary is all that protects the individual from abusive acts of powerful agencies or governments; it is the way we seek justice for ourselves and our loved ones. It lets us sleep a little better at night.  It is all the more tragic when persons such as Aldo Nastasi become Judges and behave the way the official records of the Court clearly show.  Let us be more careful in how we choose our Judges; it affects all our lives.
